The Joint Commission considers eloping a sentinel event, for which the facility is required to complete a root cause analysis. The results of the root cause analysis must be submitted to the Joint Commission. Accredited facilities are required to describe their analysis in the form of a policy, and list accountability factors in a procedure. However, regardless of accreditation status, this is a serious event. All facilities should perform a thorough and comprehensive root cause analysis of the elopement. Review policies, procedures, and systems to ensure they are effective and sufficient to protect all residents who wander.
