ASCs in the News: NJ ASCs form association, fight legislation limiting self-referrals

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, April 8, 2008

The Association of Licensure-Exempt Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ALEASC) has retained a public relations firm, MWW Group, to lobby on upcoming New Jersey legislation affecting physician self-referrals to surgery centers in which they have an interest, according to a MWW Group press release. As written, the bill would prohibit physician self-referrals, placing their ASCs at risk.

ALEASC is a recently-formed association of physicians who own Medicare-certified ASCs, representing approximately 50 facilities throughout New Jersey-one out of every four ASCs in the state, according to the press release. The ASCs are Medicare-certified, not licensed by the state Department of Health, and owned solely by groups of physicians.

ALEASC facilities serve thousands of patients, offering specialized treatment including early detection of colon cancer, said Michael W. Kempner, president and CEO of MWW Group in the press release.
