Prisoner escapes from Massachusetts hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, March 31, 2008
A massive search took place in New Bedford, MA, after a prisoner, accused of raping a teenager and a disabled elderly adult, escaped March 25 from a court officer who released him from restraints to use a hospital bathroom.
The 38-year-old prisoner was being treated at St. Luke's Hospital for injuries he sustained when he tried to escape from custody and jumped head first over a banister at New Bedford Superior Court, falling almost a full story, WBZ TV reported.
He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. When a court officer guarding the man took off his handcuffs to allow him to use a bathroom, he slipped out a second door to the bathroom and fled. The incident is under investigation by the Trial Court Security Department, which said in a statement that it appeared officers did not follow protocol that required two officers accompany any prisoner removed to a hospital.
