CDC offers education to stop unsafe injection practices
Infection Control Monitor, March 28, 2008
Concerned about recent health hazards created by unsafe injection practices, the CDC hosted an educational call March 27 for healthcare providers. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services urged providers and surveyors to listen in because recent state and federal surveys have revealed problems with providers exposing patients to diseases because they failed to adhere to safe injection practices.
In the most publicized case, a Las Vegas endoscopy center may have exposed thousands of patients to the potentially fatal hepatitis C virus by reusing syringes and vials to administer anesthesia.
The CDC call centered around safe injection and other basic infection control practices and the need to monitor healthcare personnel practices to ensure safety. Click here for a recording of the conference and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation.
