Louisiana lawmakers consider posting quality data online
Quality Improvement Monitor, March 28, 2008
Louisiana lawmakers are considering legislation that would create a state-run Web site to allow consumers to compare hospital quality and performance, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine is pushing lawmakers to pass the "Louisiana Health Care Consumers Right To Know" law, saying that people who have to undergo surgery should be able to look at hospital data on complications, infection rates, and pressure sore rates, the AP said.
"Transparency really does drive improvement," he told the AP. "There's a dual impact of it. Number one, it gives consumers the right to see the outcomes, and then number two, it does drive providers to try to improve their performance because they know it's going to be public."
