Massachusetts bill aims to require electronic medical records statewide
EHR Connection, March 24, 2008
Proposed healthcare legislation in Massachusetts would mandate statewide adoption of EMRs by 2015, according to an article in the March 4 issue of Mass High Tech: The Journal of New England Technology.
The legislation calls for $25 million annually to support EMR adoption. The amount available would total $175 million by 2015 if funding for the system begins in 2008, the journal reported. Additional tax revenue from an increase in state cigarette taxes would provide funds for the statewide system.
However, the Massachusetts e-Health Collaborative, a nonprofit group, estimated the cost of a statewide system at approximately $500 million in 2007, according to the article. The collaborative has installed EMR systems in three Massachusetts communities-Brockton, Newburyport, and North Adams-with a $50 million grant.
