PPV: HIPAA audits-what you need to know to prepare
EHR Connection, March 24, 2008
Although covered entities (CE) have known that CMS would eventually enforce the HIPAA security rule through on-site audits, they didn't know how or when it would actually happen. But in light of the announcement that CMS established a contract with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to conduct security audits, CEs may want to consider stepping up their security compliance to ensure that they are not CMS' next target.
Specific details of the CMS audits-such as how far back the audits will span-remain unknown. However, CMS has defined its audit criteria to include closer examination of security rule compliance and enforcement of the remote access guidelines released in December 2006.
