Tip: Assessing staff readiness is first step in EHR implementation process
EHR Connection, March 24, 2008
Preparing clinicians for a new process is the most important factor in implementing an EHR-and it's one that facilities often overlook.
The term clinicians refers to all clinical users of the system, including employed and affiliated physicians, nurses, pharmacists, laboratorians, therapists, and others. Use these indicators to assess EHR readiness and receptiveness at your facility:
- Physician antagonism toward or lack of interest in EHRs
- Physicians' fear of change
- Concerns about cost and return on investment by affiliated physicians and administration
- Disinterest among nurses and nursing personnel
- Concerns about ability to perform nursing duties
- Desire by therapists and other specialists for "specialty" systems
- Financial and administrative personnel recommendations for bridge technology instead of EHR systems
