Pharmacists play role in infection control
Infection Control Monitor, March 21, 2008
The American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists (ASHP) is urging The Joint Commission to amend its proposed 2009 National Patient Safety Goals to include an emphasis on the role pharmacists play in preventing healthcare-associated infections.
The group submitted comments to the accreditor encouraging Joint Commission officials to include pharmacists in the list of healthcare providers who should lead efforts to prevent infections, such as pneumonia and surgical site infections, because of pharmacists' expertise in appropriate antibiotic use, the ASHP said in a press release.
