Tip: Report new 2008 code for fracture treatment of the tibia, fibula, and ankle
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 18, 2008
In 2008, The American Medical Association (AMA) released four new codes for fracture treatment for the tibia, fibula, and ankle. The new codes are:
- 27726-Repair of a nonunion and/or malunion of the fibula with internal fixation used in the procedure. Coders should use this code for a fibular ankle fracture malunion that has healed improperly with malrotation and derangement at the ankle. During this procedure, the surgeon realigns the bones into the correct position using internal fixation. The CPT Manual states that coders should not report this code in conjunction with a fibular osteotomy (code 27707).
- 27767-Closed treatment of posterior malleolus fracture performed without manipulation.
- 27768-Closed treatment of a posterior malleolus fracture performed with manipulation.
- 27769-Open treatment of a posterior malleolus fracture. This code includes internal fixation (if it is performed during the procedure).
The CPT Manual states that coders should not report these codes with bimalleolar or trimalleolar ankle fracture treatment codes 27808-27823.
