PPV: Protect against the dangers of remote access
EHR Connection, March 17, 2008
Emerging communication technology in healthcare is yesterday's news-but the federal government's plan to police providers' technology use in accordance with HIPAA will remain on the front page in 2008.
CMS considers concerns about remote access a serious matter and recently retained PricewaterhouseCoopers to assist in its investigations of alleged security violations.
"It's much more likely higher penalties would be imposed if the violations were found to be the result of deliberate or negligent failure to address HIPAA," says John R. Christiansen, JD, managing director at Christiansen IT Law in Seattle. So providers must identify security shortcomings and take steps to remedy them.
