Tip of the week: Perfect your policies
Infection Control Monitor, March 14, 2008
All too often, ICPs draft a comprehensive, well-written policy that outlines what people should be doing-and then get in trouble because nobody is actually following it, says Gay Howard, RN, CPHQ, CLNC, a consultant for The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA.
The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) requires relatively few written policies, says Howard. However, it does require facilities to fully follow their own policies and internal mandates. One pitfall is to draft policies and procedures that are too complex, too convoluted, or don't follow the standard of practice at your facility.
