Hood efficiency depends on laboratory practice

Lab Safety Advisor, March 11, 2008

A strip of tape on the bench surface is a good reminder of the proper distance for airflow. Do not place large, bulky objects such as boxes, computers,or other equipment in hoods. Such items disrupt airflow. If you must place such items inside a hood, raise them two or three inches above the work surface to allow air to flow underneath the equipment.

Equip all hoods with monitors and alarms that alert the staff to problems with air balancing, face velocities, filters and other mechanical problems. Do not assume that every hood has equipment with these features. Many manufacturers consider them to be extra-cost accessories.
