News: Humana cuts ASCs from network, patient costs to rise
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 11, 2008
Humana has decided to cut two Prexus Health Ambulatory Surgery Centers in Ohio from its network as of March 31 in response to a disagreement over a newly proposed reimbursement plan, according to a March 1 article in the Middletown (OH) Journal.
Prexus rejected the Humana proposal that would decrease reimbursement by double-digits, according to the article. In response, Humana, which claims it developed the new reimbursement plan to remain competitive, sent Prexus a letter indicating it would cut two of its ASCs (Evendale Surgery Center and the Surgery Center of Cincinnati) as a result.
Humana's cuts will mean increased costs for patients, Randy Leffler, executive director of the Ohio Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, told the Journal.
