Utah bill seeks state Medicaid program reimbursement for ASCs

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 4, 2008

The Utah legislators are currently considering a controversial bill (S.B. 82) that would require Medicaid to reimburse ASCs for providing services to its beneficiaries, according to a February 11 article in the Deseret Morning News.

"By July 1, 2008, an ambulatory surgical center shall be permitted to qualify as a provider eligible for reimbursement for services provided according to the state Medicaid plan," states the bill, which is cosponsored by Senator Allen Christensen (R-UT) and Representative Paul Ray (R-UT).

Advocates of the bill suggest that the legislation will decrease healthcare costs, though critics suggest that the bill will drive up the costs by increasing the number of surgeries performed, the Deseret Morning News reports.
