Report new 2008 CPT codes for hip and pelvis fractures and dislocations
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, March 4, 2008
The American Medical Association (AMA) has added three new CPT codes for 2008 for the treatment of fractures and dislocations of the hip and pelvis. The codes are:
- Code 27267-Closed treatment of femoral fracture, proximal end, head; without manipulation
- Code 27268-Closed treatment of femoral fracture, proximal end, head; with manipulation
- Code 27269-Open treatment of femoral fracture, proximal end, head, includes internal fixation, when performed
Coders should report these new codes for traumatic femoral head injuries (that occur primarily in younger patients) rather than for the more common hip fractures (that occur primarily in the elderly due to osteoporosis).
