Officers thwart inmate's attempted escape

Healthcare Security Weekly, March 3, 2008

Four correctional officers and at least two hospital security officers successfully restrained a prison inmate who tried to escape during a hospital visit.

The inmate, accused in the fatal stabbing of a correctional officer in 2006, tried to escape from Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore February 25, the Baltimore Sun reported. The 37-year-old inmate, who was being held at the Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center, was being examined for an undetermined illness or injury. The inmate, who was wearing restraints as required, tried to flee by taking a couple of steps and officers immediately restrained him, a spokesman for the state's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services told the newspaper.

No one was injured and the inmate was immediately returned to the prison.
