U.S. government estimates healthcare-related spending to rise sharply in next decade

Quality Improvement Monitor, February 29, 2008

An aging population and higher prices will cause healthcare spending to rise 6.7 percent annually throughout the next decade, reports The Boston Globe. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said on February 25 that by 2017, healthcare spending was predicted to rise to $4.3 trillion per year, or an average of $13, 101 per person. Federal and state governments will pay for 39% of healthcare expenditures by then, up from 46% in 2006.

In addition, spending related to hospitals themselves will rise 6.9% per year during the next decade, economists predicted.
