Electronic medical records are odds-on favorite in Las Vegas

EHR Connection, February 25, 2008

Las Vegas physicians, patients, and health insurers have all hit the jackpot with electronic medical records, according to an article in the February 10 Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Physicians and insurers like the technology because it saves money and streamlines health transactions by making patients' health information available in seconds instead of days, the newspaper said. Patients like it because all of their medical information-prescriptions, diagnoses, and laboratory results-are accessible via their home computers.

Southwest Medical Associates (SMA), the state's largest physician group and a subsidiary of Sierra Health Services, launched My SMA Health Online as a pilot project in 2007. Approximately 11,000 patients have signed on for personal Web pages since its inception.

Patients' personal pages offer options that allow them to schedule, change, or cancel appointments with primary care physicians and pediatricians. They also can view their medical records, immunizations, and test results. Other windows allow them to request prescription renewals, manage and update their personal account information, and e-mail their physicians.

Future upgrades will enable SMA patients to pay medical bills online, schedule appointments with specialists, verify whether an insurer has approved a referral, and receive annual examination reminders, according to the article.
