PPV: HIPAA security enforcement will heat up in 2008

The end of 2007 brings to a close a tumultuous year for covered entities, which faced NPI difficulties and saw an increased emphasis on security throughout the year. Although a hard deadline for NPI use approaches in May, one thing is certain-HIPAA is undergoing some major developments.
"2007 was the year of NPI," says Karen Trudel, deputy director of CMS' Office of E-Health Standards and Services. "Once we get over the NPI hurdle, what comes next?"
The answer is: plenty. Covered entities should be on their toes in 2008.
