CDC says states better prepared to meet public health emergencies

Infection Control Monitor, February 22, 2008

In its first report on public health preparedness, the CDC said states have made significant process when it comes to emergency preparedness for events such as flu pandemics or bioterrorism attacks, but major challenges remain.

The CDC cited improvements in disease detection, investigation, and laboratory testing capacity in the report released February 20. With the federal government targeting more than $5 billion since 2002, states have an increased capacity to respond to a wide range of health hazards and emergencies, said the CDC's director Julie Gerberding, MD. For example, all states now have emergency response plans in place to address hazards including an influenza pandemic, improved ability to identify and confirm public health threats, and increased collaboration and communication.
