Tip of the week: Educate staff about MRSA
Healthcare Security Weekly, February 25, 2008
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is and always was an employee safety matter-in addition to being a headline-grabbing patient safety issue-says Iris Udasin, MD, associate professor at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.
Hospital policy should require educating all employees who might come in contact with a MRSA patient-including ancillary staff members-about how to protect themselves. It's also important to remind staff members about proper hand hygiene
"For safety managers, I think educating their work force [members] in respect to what MRSA is and how they can protect themselves would go a long way toward controlling the spread of MRSA in their particular facilities," says Corey Robertson, MD, MPH, medical director for the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services in Trenton.
