300,000 Blue Cross members in NJ learn stolen laptop contains their personal data

EHR Connection, February 18, 2008

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) has notified its members that a laptop computer containing personal information about approximately 300,000 of its members was stolen in early January, according to a January 30 Information Week article.

Horizon BCBSNJ posted the following information in a news alert on its Web site:

  • The theft of an employee's laptop occurred in Newark January 5
  • The stolen computer included the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of approximately 300,000 members
  • The stolen laptop did not contain any medical data
  • The company has sent letters to all affected members notifying them of the theft
  • Free credit monitoring is available to affected members for one year
  • Horizon BCBSNJ believes that it is highly unlikely that any personal data on the computer has been accessed because it is password-protected
  • A security feature installed January 23 destroys all data on the stolen computer
