What you should know about canopy hoods

Lab Safety Advisor, February 15, 2008

Canopy hoods are unfiltered and not enclosed. They are used only to exhaust odors, heat and humidity from the immediate environment. In laboratories they are often located over autoclaves, ovens and other heat-producing pieces of equipment.

Never use canopy hoods in areas where biohazards or chemicals such as xylene or formalin are present because they will put vapors and aerosols into the breathing zone, contaminating users and leaking contaminates into the surrounding areas.
