Massachusetts cracks down on infections

Quality Improvement Monitor, February 15, 2008

Regulators in Massachusetts this week launched a crackdown to reduce the spread of hospital infections, according to the Boston Globe.

State inspectors will regularly visit hospitals to see if they are following rules on preventing infections and reporting them promptly when they occur, the Globe said. The Public Health Commission will also issue report cards on infection rates and post the data on a state Web site.

Hospitals that flout the rules or have an excessive number of infections could forfeit their licenses, Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach told the newspaper.
