NY health information exchange to send test data
EHR Connection, February 11, 2008
The Health Information Exchange of New York (HIXNY) will begin transmitting test data across its network soon, according to an article in the January 22 edition of The Daily Gazette, a Schenectady newspaper.
The test is a prerequisite to regionwide sharing of laboratory, prescription, and other electronic information via a secure Web-based platform, the newspaper reported. "If we put better information in physician's hands quickly, they're going to be able to make better decisions," Dominick Bizzarro, HIXNY's chief executive told The Daily Gazette.
Preparation for this initiative began in 2005 when chief information officers from six hospitals, practices, and health plans in New York's Capital Region formed a task force to coordinate the interoperability effort, the newspaper said. The state Department of Health awarded HIXNY a $1.7 million grant to establish a clinical data information exchange in 2006.
Early participants among HIXNY's 21 members will include:
- Northeast Health, Troy
- Seton Health, Troy
- Prime Care Physicians, Albany
- Community Care Physicians, Latham
- Ellis Hospital, Schenectady
- St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady
- Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Springs
- St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam
"Once we're good at sharing information locally or regionally then it would be good to share it throughout upstate," Dr. John Collins, chief medical officer of Northeast Health and a member of HIXNY's board of directors, told The Daily Gazette. Discussions about sharing electronic health information are under way between HIXNY and the Adirondack Regional Community Health Information Exchange based in Glens Falls.
