Washington hospitals stop charging for never events

Quality Improvement Monitor, February 1, 2008

Washington hospitals have joined those in a handful of other states that have promised not to bill patients for egregious medical mistakes, according to the Seattle Times.

The list of never events includes 28 errors from surgery performed on the wrong limb or wrong patient to foreign objects left behind in surgery, the paper said.

"If we can avoid adding insult to injury where patients have been affected by an adverse event, then we're taking a step that is right," Brian Wicks, MD, president of the Washington Medical Association, told the paper.
