Tip of the week: Conduct and document evaluation of your IC program

Infection Control Monitor, February 1, 2008

Anecdotal evidence indicates that Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) surveyors are looking more closely at IC programs. One common problem area is standard IC.5.10, element of performance 1, which requires the healthcare organization to conduct a formal evaluation of the IC program at least annually or whenever risks change significantly.

To ensure that your facility is in compliance, conduct this evaluation at least once per year -- more often if you experience a noteworthy change to your program. Also, be certain you are documenting the review; you can't prove it was completed if you can't produce documentation. It's always helpful to repeat the requirements for the standard in your report.

To learn more about the top problem areas, go to www.hcpro.com/content/203735.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
