Circulating Nurse Act may change ASC requirements

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 5, 2008

The Pennsylvania House scheduled to vote on Pennsylvania House Bill 1867, better known as the Circulating Nurse Act, in late January, according to a Government Affairs legislative update.

The legislation would require a registered circulating nurse in certain operating rooms. The rule specifically refers to procedures performed under moderate sedation in ASCs, stating:

Only a registered nurse, licensed in this Commonwealth, qualified by training and experience in operating room nursing shall be present as a circulating nurse during all surgical procedures performed by a physician in a health care facility for the duration of the procedure with the exception of surgical procedures that are not performed under general anesthesia or moderate sedation in an ambulatory surgical facility.
