Coding tip: Discover the new 2008 arthroscopic code for the shoulder biceps tenodesis
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, February 5, 2008
The American Medical Association issued a new arthroscopic code for a biceps tenodesis for 2008. Use this new CPT code, 29828, for an arthroscopy, shoulder, surgical; biceps tenodesis. This is a very welcome addition, as physicians frequently perform this procedure, and the only codes for use previously for an arthroscopic biceps tenodesis procedure were the 29999 unlisted code or HCPCS code S2114-both of which made reimbursement a challenge.
Use code 29828 for biceps tendon repairs of such condition as tendon tears, tendinosis, and subluxation.
If the physician performs the following procedures during the same session, do not bill for them separately, according to CPT guidance:
- Diagnostic shoulder arthroscopy
- Arthroscopic shoulder synovectomy
- Arthroscopic shoulder debridement
