Massachusetts Senate bill may create stricter ASC rules
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 29, 2008
In 2007, the Massachusetts state Senate did not pass Bill 1318, which would have created licensure rules for new ASCs through the Massachusetts health department, as well as a required purpose of need before any new ASC construction occurred.
This same bill is still eligible for 2008, however there has been no action with the bill since its first hearing in 2007.
The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and state orthopedic societies strive to defeat bills such as Senate Bill 1318. "In many states, legislation intended to restrict the ability of such facilities to practice highly specialized medicine poses a challenge for orthopaedists practicing in these settings," according to the AAOS Web site.
For more information, view the ASC section of the AAOS Web site here.
