Tip of the week: Perform proactive education
Infection Control Monitor, January 25, 2008
Looking for ways to ensure the success of your IC program? When you're visiting different departments, don't look only for problems; focus on opportunities to educate people, says Barbara A. Smith, RN, an ICP at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. For example, when you visit a patient to examine an IV catheter, take that opportunity to instruct healthcare workers on the related procedures.
You can also enlist other members of the department to do this type of training, as it's often too time-consuming for ICPs to handle many one-on-one encounters in addition to their other job responsibilities.
To learn more about ways to involve all departments in IC efforts, go to www.hcpro.com/content/203734.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
