Security guard tackles man with two grenades

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 14, 2008

A security guard's quick action is credited with stopping a 44-year-old man with a history of mental illness who entered the emergency department at a Detroit hospital with two live grenades, reported the Associated Press (AP).

The man entered the Detroit Receiving Hospital and was searched by security guards after he triggered a metal detector on January 5. An officer found the man had a grenade in one hand with the pin removed, reported The Detroit Free Press.

The officer tackled the man and the hospital evacuated the emergency room. Police found two pipe bombs and two grenades in the man's house. He was hospitalized for evaluation, the AP reported. The 30-year-old guard suffered a broken ankle in the scuffle, according to the Free Press.
