Hospital security guard not guilty in assault of doctor

Healthcare Security Weekly, January 14, 2008

A security guard from the University of Maryland Medical Center was found not guilty January 8 of assaulting a Muslin physician who was washing his feet in the hospital's bathroom sink as part of a religious ritual.

A Baltimore City Circuit Judge found the guard not guilty of second-degree assault, reported the Baltimore Examiner. The charge was filed by a 61-year-old radiologist who accused the security guard of assaulting him before his scheduled outpatient surgery for tongue cancer on March 22. The physician filed a $30 million lawsuit against the medical center in April and later pressed criminal charges against the security guard.
