Tip of the week: Fight MRSA with standard precautions
Infection Control Monitor, January 11, 2008
While some hospitals have begun screening staff members for MRSA, testing remains a contentious issue. Facilities might better control the spread of infection, by encouraging staff members to follow standard precautions, says Dawn Terashita, MD, MPH, medical epidemiologist of acute communicable disease control at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Terashita offers several ways to encourage hand hygiene and IC compliance with the following strategies:
- Provide incentives
- Use signs as reminders
- Hire hand-hygiene spies
- Ensure that sinks, soaps, and alcohol-based hand sanitizers are readily available
To learn more about the pros and cons of testing staff for MRSA, go to www.hcpro.com/content/202074.cfm. The cost is $10. Briefings on Infection Control subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
