Orthopedic surgeons, HealthSouth pay $14.9 million for false claims

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, January 8, 2008

Orthopedic surgeons James Andrews, MD, and Lawrence Lemak, MD, along with the Birmingham, AL-based HealthSouth Corporation settled to pay the U.S. government a grand total of $14.9 million for allegedly submitting false claims. The U.S. government also claims that HealthSouth "paid illegal kickbacks to physicians who referred patients for care in some of its hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, and ambulatory surgery centers," according to the article.
