Tip of the week: Look closely at suicide risks
Healthcare Security Weekly, January 7, 2008
To keep Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) surveyors satisfied, hospitals should take a close look at any items that might be considered a suicide risk in their facilities.
During its July survey, Paradise Valley Hospital, a 301-bed acute care facility in National City, CA, was cited for a potential suicide hazard having to do with a seemingly innocuous item-a stereo electric cord. Other items the surveyor found to be suicide risks included door handles and plastic breakaway shower rods.
To learn more about the survey, go to www.hcpro.com/ppv-202064.html. The cost is $10. Briefings on Hospital Safety subscribers received this story with their subscriptions.
