HIV cases rise in young gay men
Infection Control Monitor, January 4, 2008
While new cases of HIV have decreased overall, the number of cases among young gay men are on the increase, reported the New York Times.
Citing figures from New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the number of new HIV infections in gay men under 30 has increased sharply in the city in the last five years, the Times reported. The increase occurred particularly among blacks and Hispanics, even as AIDS deaths and overall HIV infection rates in the city steadily declined, the newspaper said.
AIDS experts blame the increase on higher rates of drug use among younger men, which can lead to dangerous sex practices, optimism that AIDS can be treated, and a growing stigma about HIV that keeps some men from revealing they are infected with the virus, the Times reported.
