Tip of the week: Use public concerns about MRSA to educate
Infection Control Monitor, January 4, 2008
Recent headlines have heightened the public's fears about MRSA and left healthcare consumers seeking more information about how to protect themselves. That means infection control professionals (ICPs) need to be as well versed in public relations skills as they are in IC measures.
Smart ICPs, says one expert, will see this not as a burden or inconvenience but as an opportunity to build communication with patients and families. "The public is fertile right now to receive education on basic hand hygiene and prevention. As professionals, we should seize these opportunities to reach out to the public and provide [it]," says Deborah Fry, an ICP at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA.
