eHealth Initiative survey reports progress

EHR Connection, January 7, 2008

eHealth Initiative announced the results of its Fourth Annual Survey of Health Information Exchange at the State, Regional, and Community Levels in a December 19, 2007 press release.

The survey, which assesses 130 community-based efforts designed to improve health and healthcare through the electronic mobilization of health information, found that some health information exchange (HIE) initiatives are continuing to mature, while others are no longer moving forward. The survey also revealed that the most important drivers include those related to improving quality and patient safety and those addressing inefficiencies experienced by providers.

The primary focus of HIE initiatives include exchanging clinical data, supporting direct care delivery, and adding support functions to augment data services, according to the press release.

The survey also revealed that HIE initiatives are formalizing their operations by creating legal entities and that clinicians, community health centers, employers, health plans, hospitals, patients, and quality improvement organizations are most likely to play a governance role.
