Early detection, data mining combat MRSA

Quality Improvement Monitor, January 4, 2008

Hospitals in California and throughout the nation have found that aggressive action to detect methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is helping combat the superbug, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Nine California hospitals prevented an estimated 600 healthcare-associated infections with a data-mining program that flagged infections quickly and halted their spread, the paper said.

The hospitals participating in the 18-month-long project saved $9 million in treatment costs, Deborah Schwab, director of health and technology for the Blue Shield of California Foundation, the healthcare philanthropy that sponsored the million-dollar experiment, told the Times.
