Vermont hospital increases security
Healthcare Security Weekly, December 31, 2007
Think of Vermont and images of white-steepled churches, colorful foliage, and rolling green hills may come to mind. But even in this picturesque, largely rural state, facilities are reacting to the nationwide trend towards more security in hospitals.
Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin has beefed up security in its emergency department (ED), reported the Associated Press. The facility has installed magnetic locks on the five doors in the ED, which staff can unlock with their badges. Before the locks were installed, anyone could walk through the area, creating concerns about security and patient privacy, the hospital's nurse manager told the news service.
The new security system also is designed to prevent patients with dementia from wandering away.
