Tip of the week: Expand the criteria to treat C. diff
Infection Control Monitor, December 28, 2007
In an effort to combat C. diff, the Cleveland VA Medical Center expanded its criteria for patients who may be carrying the bacterium.
Patients who have previously had C. diff will continue to shed the organism long after they've been treated, says Curtis Donskey, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the infectious disease section of the center.
"What we've done is changed our IC policy to include patients who have had C. diff in the past and treat them using modified isolation precautions," says Donskey. Healthcare workers now interact with these patients using gloves.
