Edema

Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, December 28, 2007

Edema is an accumulation of fluid in the tissues. Many long-term care facility residents have acute and chronic medical conditions in which edema is a problem. Edema requires regular monitoring and careful assessment. The resident often gains 5 to 10 lbs before edema is noticed. As retained fluid increases, the heart works harder and blood pressure increases.
