Some antibiotics may not help fight sinus infections

Infection Control Monitor, December 21, 2007

Physicians may have to rethink how they treat patients' sinus infections in the light of new research that suggests certain antibiotics and other oft-prescribed medicine is ineffectual.

A British study, published in the December 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found people with sinus infections generally improved within about two weeks, whether or not they took the frequently prescribed antibiotic amoxicillin, a steroid nose spray, or a placebo, reported the Associated Press. The results, based on patients' reporting of whether their symptoms improved, are similar to previous findings in children.
