Hospital workers get education in gangs 101

Healthcare Security Weekly, December 24, 2007

If your hospital is in a location where gang violence is a problem, you may want to take a lesson from some facilities in New Jersey.

Earlier this month, about 40 hospital workers spent the day learning about different gangs in New Jersey from law enforcement officials and medical professionals, reported The Record. The workshop, sponsored by the New Jersey Hospital Association, was held to teach staff how to address security issues they might encounter when gang members are wheeled into their emergency rooms, Mary A. Ditri, a director for the group told the newspaper.

During the workshop, workers learned the ins and outs of gang life and how to tell if a patient is a gang member. For instance, nurses, doctors, and hospital security officers were advised that a certain tattoo could mean a patient is a member of a gang, and that certain gang members should be kept away from rivals.
