Tip of the week: Work with ambulance providers
Healthcare Security Weekly, December 24, 2007
A problem for hospitals in cities where gang violence is prevalent occurs when ambulances bring rival gang members to the same emergency room for treatment of their injuries after a violent confrontation.
To avoid violence either in the hospital or after patients leave, parole officers who took part in a New Jersey workshop advised medical staff to keep any patients who may be gang members separate to the greatest extent possible. They suggested hospitals talk with their ambulance providers, to notify the hospital before the arrival of patients who may have been injured in a gang-related incident.
Hospitals that are located in cities with multiple medical facilities, may also suggest ambulance providers take suspected gang members to separate emergency departments if possible.
