Texas hospital to screen all patients for MRSA

A Texas-based hospital intends to spend $1 million per year to screen every incoming patient for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Scott and White Hospital, Temple, TX, will swab the nostrils of incoming patients and use a molecular analysis test to look for MRSA. Patients who are found to carry MRSA will be treated using a series of specific hygiene, sanitation, and medication precautions.
According to Scott and White Hospital (which is affiliated with Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine), it can cost $35,000 to treat a patient with MRSA.
