Tip: Plan for a paperless panacea

EHR Connection, December 10, 2007

Somehow, achieving a paperless state remains an elusive goal for approximately one-third of organizations that implement EHRs. Charles Parker, vice president and chief technology officer of Masspro in Waltham, MA, offers several suggestions to help you avoid a similar fate:

  • Identify your needs by asking yourself what needs improvement before you schedule vendor presentations.
  • Review your work flow to determine how it will change when a paper record no longer exists.
  • Communicate with staff members to ensure that you develop a plan that works well for everyone affected by the elimination of paper records.
  • Increase employee confidence by creating a progressive and evolving learning environment that doesn't overwhelm users with information overload.
  • Request specific information to compensate for the lack of detail that is characteristic of many vendor contracts-so you'll know what's happening, when it's happening and how it's happening.

This tip is brought to you by the December issue of Electronic Health Records Briefing.
