Leavitt wants EHR use to determine physicians' Medicare reimbursement rate

EHR Connection, December 10, 2007

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt wants Congress to require physicians to "implement health information technology that meets department standards in order to be eligible for higher payments from Medicare," according to a December 3 HHS press release.

Leavitt's most recent endorsement of EHR implementation comes as Congressional leaders continue work on legislation aimed at preventing a reduction in Medicare reimbursement rates required by law that will become effective January 1, 2008.

"The benefits of utilizing health information technology for keeping electronic health records and other purposes are clear," Leavitt said. "This technology will produce a higher quality of care, while reducing medical costs and errors, which kill more Americans each year than highway accidents, breast cancer or AIDS."
